The Choice

pulpit

Years ago we lived in England and attended a British church.  The church there had a pulpit that was on the second level.  There were also seats around the outside of that second level.  This sweet church taught me so much about worship and praise.  They had a time of prayer and praise each Sunday.  We would close our eyes and one person might pray, and then someone would start a song.  The pastor would step up and close us in prayer when the worship time was complete.  One week we had a guest speaker.  He was a young man with a severe spine disease that caused him to be bent over and in a lot of pain most of the time.  On the day he spoke one of the songs we sang was this chorus:

O give thanks to the Lord,
All you His people,
O give thanks to the Lord for He is good.
Let us praise, let us thank,
Let us celebrate and dance,
O give thanks to the Lord for He is good.

The speaker was in the pulpit at the time.  As we sang, my husband opened his eyes and witnessed a special event.  The man with the bent back, was in his own way trying to dance.  He could barely move, but he was dancing.  He made a choice.  A choice to worship despite the pain.  He likely wouldn’t be healed in this life, but he didn’t let that stop him from praising God.  Jim tapped me and I got to see it too.  No one was supposed to witness this sacrifice of praise, but I am glad we got to take a peek.  It changed me forever.  Lately I have been thinking about that day.  I need to make a choice to celebrate and dance every day.  I find the choice easy to make, for like the chorus says, He is good!
